Our core camps are based on a choice/progression curriculum which provides campers with an option to choose from offered activities and develop skills in the process. This decision making program allows teens to choose their activities on an individual basis while junior campers learn to work as a team within their own group to make those choices.
Our Junior Discovery Camp offers the most popular traditional day camp activities combined with the opportunity for campers to choose and explore a variety of new interests. To promote a sense of wonder and engagement, we offer programs that facilitate exploration and active involvement. Campers attend activities designed to foster independence and self-expression as well as enhance their intellectual, physical, and social development.
The Junior Discovery Camp is for campers who will be entering the kindergarten through fifth grades in the coming fall as well as for campers entering kindergarten for our half-day option (our half-day program is open to all campers and we also accept kindergarteners for our full day program on a case-by-case basis if parents are sure of their child’s ability to attend for that duration). Our program operates from 9:00am-4:00pm and is divided into four activity periods which includes swimming daily. During the course of each week, Junior Discovery campers participate in a core group of activities. Along with those core activities are other activity options that are chosen by their group as a team. This cooperative method fosters the ability of campers to work together in a group setting, to communicate preferences to their team members and to come to final decisions jointly (a great trait to learn for siblings!) A small sample of the activities we offer include:
Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Canoeing, Dance, Disc Golf, Drama, Drawing, Drumming, Fishing, Flag Football, Hiking, Lacrosse, Lanyards, Leather craft, Magic, Magic the Gathering, Nature Studies, Orienteering, Outdoor cooking, Painting, Photography (digital), Ping-Pong, Rocketry, Rollerskating, Rowing, Science Projects, Scrap-booking, Sculpting, Singing, Skits, Soccer, Softball, Swim Lessons, Swimming, T-Ball, Tie-dye, Videography, Volleyball, Weaving, Woodworking
(Note: listed activities are not all available at the same time! See our FAQ section)
On a weekly basis, we have special events and theme activities in both the daily curriculum and on a camp wide basis. The curriculum is developed on a progression so those campers attending multiple weeks will continue to have new learning experiences.
Sometimes after reading our program descriptions and philosophy, parents wonder if their child will have a little too much control and be able to do the same activity all day long. The answer is a resounding “no.” Although our teens have more latitude and operate individually, Junior Discovery campers work together in their group with the help of their counselors. Campers are also required to experience each of our ten core activity areas at least one time during the week. Answers to other common questions about our curriculum may be found in our FAQ section by clicking here.
At the Marcus Lewis Day Camp, providing low camper to counselor ratios is a cornerstone of our program. The ratios are approximately 5:1 of ADULTS to campers. Why do we capitalize “adults?” Because many programs will advertise a similar ratio or one that is even lower, however they often fail to mention that they calculate a 14 or 15 year-old junior counselor into that equation. We have teen leaders who assist with very simple tasks, however they are not placed into supervisory roles and they are never calculated into our ratios.
Campers are grouped according to their age and the grade they will be entering in the fall. Small groups help make each child’s experience special by optimizing peer interaction, camper-to-counselor relationships, quality supervision, safety and program participation.
Both the Junior Discovery and Teen camps are based on a very unique and progressive philosophy that involves the building of a child’s self-esteem and self-image through a system that is exclusive to our camp. Our “Spirit Concept” model was designed specifically as the answer to weaving character building themes within the framework of engaging and enjoyable activities. Click here if you would like to learn more about this progressive system.
Our Junior Discovery camp is also offered as a half-day program for those who are interested in a shorter version. Click here to find out more. We also recommend viewing the activities page which illustrates the various activity areas that are used for our program.
